Thanks for stopping by. I’m Avis Kalfsbeek, the author of the Pedro the Water Dog Saves the Planet series—a lighthearted blend of environmental activism, satire, and best-friend fiction.

So far, there are six books in the series: One More Year, Plastic Plankton, Bike Rock, Copper Cobra, Mono Mutante, and Planeteering. At least two more are on the way. Below you’ll find a short summary of each, in case one sparks your fancy.

Mono Mutante, Book 6, means a lot to me. It’s about food, and it’s rooted in my farming upbringing.

If you’d like to read from the beginning, Book 1 is One More Year.

I began writing One More Year while living in the beautiful northern Idaho town of Sandpoint. The idea took root after a conversation with my daughter about the pain she felt over environmental destruction. There’s a scene in the book where Tilly tells Camas what “one more year” really means. We were on a mountaintop overlooking Calistoga when my daughter tugged her beanie down to hide her teary eyes and said, “You know, Mom, they cut the tops off mountains for coal and don’t put them back.”

That was the moment I knew I had to try. To write stories that are loving, irreverent, and a little rebellious—stories that invite people to care deeply while laughing, crying, and maybe even hopping on a bike. I wrote a little of Jessie into Tilly. A little of my son Timothy into Moore. There are other real-life inspirations, too, but as my books say:

“This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, companies, or locales is coincidental or satirical. Some events described herein are similar to events that actually happened or—if visionary and affirmative—describe perfectly possible events in the future.”

That’s right. I write toward a future.

A future where we slow down.

Walk more trails.

Ride more bikes.

Put down the guns.

And love each other more.

We have a distance to travel. Will you come along?

Each book includes a letter from the wise and ridiculous imaginary Pedro the Water Dog. My real-life sidekick, Teo Panadero Pescadero, says: Yes, please come. The more the merrier!

Peace and love,

Avis
